The following is the wording from the marker above placed within the cemetery:

In Grateful Memory to the Defenders of Cavett’s Blockhouse

Upon this spot stood the house of Alexander Cavett, who was murdered together with two men and the Cavett family of twelve, September 25th 1793 after heroic resistance against a combined Creek and Cherokee force numbering one thousand warriors, thereby insuring failure of the intended attack upon the town of Knoxville.

Good afternoon Compatriots!

The Mars Hill Cemetery clean-up was a resounding success. It was a lot of hard work but the comraderie made it all worthwhile.

The cemetery was in fairly good shape, overall, except for the perimeter areas and one overgrown spot right in the middle of the cemetery. 9 Stephen Holston SAR members worked with about 5 or 6 volunteers from the Cavett Station DAR Chapter.

The chainsaws were roaring, the weed-whippers buzzing, and the loppers and rakes were flying; making short work of the overgrowth. Thank goodness for Gene Bayless' trailer! I think it was fully loaded 5 or 6 times to haul the debris out to the roadside.

As you can see from the pictures, the final result was a much more open look at the cemetery and its scattered headstones.

Those present all agreed that this should be a semi-annual event, Spring and Fall, to keep the site in good order. Even with the large amount of work yesterday, it took us only two and a half hours to complete. On a regular basis, the time commitment will be minimal.

Thanks to all of the Compatriots who donated your time (and backs) yesterday......
Gene Bayless, John Ellis, Doug Fidler, Leonard Hill, David Johnston, Paul Jorden, Glen Lintner, and Bob and Willie Reich.....it was a job well done!
